Shop Guidance

  1. Safety rules, instructions and signs are to be followed. If in doubt about the safe or proper way to do a job, check with your supervisor.
  2. Do not report to work if you are under the influence of any intoxicants, illegal drugs, or any substance that may affect your capability to work.
  3. Be alert to unsafe conditions or acts and report them to your supervisor immediately.
  4. Report any injury or illness promptly to your supervisor so that proper treatment can be received.
  5. Running, shoving and horseplay are not permitted.
  6. Use designated aisles and walkways.
  7. Never walk or stand beneath suspended loads or pass between swinging loads and fixed objects.
  8. Clean mud and debris from shoes or boots before climbing ladders, truck beds, truck cabs, etc. to avoid slipping.
  9. Do not use compressed air to blow dirt or dust from your body or clothing. Do not blow compressed air at another person.
  10. Pay attention to all posted caution, danger and warning signs and barricades. All such signs and barricades must be left in place. Also pay attention to signals from cranes and mobile equipment.
  11. No one is to start, repair or adjust any equipment or machinery unless authorized and directed to do so by the supervisor.
  12. Machine guards and other safety devices are to be in place and only removed by authorized persons. Guards must be in place before starting machines. Make certain everyone is in the clear before starting equipment and machinery.
  13. Do not wear loose fitting clothing or gloves around moving machinery where there is danger of being caught in or on equipment.
  14. Be familiar with your work area, other operations and employees. Know the location of the firefighting equipment, first aid stations, emergency exits, telephones, etc.
  15. Always be alert for cranes, mobile equipment and railroad cars.
  16. Equipment is to be locked and an “out of service” tag is to be attached during repairs or maintenance. Never attempt to operate or open the switch of equipment under repair.
  17. Never tie down, block out or remove any machine guard or safety device.
  18. Maintain all tools in good working condition. Return them to their proper place after use. Do not use improper tools for the job. Report to your supervisor any tools or equipment not in good or safe working order.
  19. Do not ride on any railroad car, truck, forklift or mobile equipment unless authorized to do so.
  20. Observe all posted speed and warning signs when operating mobile equipment in the plant and plant area.
  21. Before starting and operating any equipment or machinery, check for the safety of all persons.
  22. Do not use make-shift devices as a work platform for access to other elevations. Use stairs, ladders or scaffolds which comply with OSHA standards.
  23. If repairing equipment or climbing on anything over 10 feet tall, restraints should be used.
  24. All electrical wires, conductors and equipment must be considered as being live until it is positively known that they are dead. Take precautions against wet conditions when using electrical cords or tools.
  25. All pipes must be labeled as to contents and pressure, if applicable.
  26. Maintain clean and clear walkways throughout the shop.
