Submittals were reviewed in particular on the ways in which reinforced concrete has been leveraged by professionals to improve the structure’s value, sustainability, appearance, and durability. All submittals were judged on the basis of the extent to which ultimate outcome objectives were achieved. Special consideration was given to design and/or construction approaches that leverage steel reinforced concrete in an innovative manner or to an exceptional degree.

Louisville, KY
Design Team: K. Norman Berry Associates, Architects / RAI Engineering
Construction Team Manager: Whittenberg Construction Company
Recognized for design and construction excellence for longevity, safety, shape, and usage considerations. Unique design included roughly 3/4 of the 2nd and 3rd floors having a curved perimeter with differing radiuses, including varying cantilevers. Vibration mitigation in the classrooms and labs were additional factors where reinforced concrete was beneficial.

Hollywood, FL
Design Team: Klai Juba Wald Architects / DeSimone Consulting Engineers
Construction Team Manager: Suffolk-Yates
Recognized for design and construction excellence for shape, usage, and environmental concerns. The structure was designed to withstand 170 mph winds and the unique shape of the guitar building with its sloping columns required concrete slabs to serve as a rigid diaphragm and to support horizontal thrust loads.
HONORS Award - Commercial and Mixed-Use
New Brunswick, NJ
Design Team: Elkus Manfredi Architects / DeSimone Consulting Engineers
Construction Team Manager: AJD Construction
Recognized for design and construction excellence for the unique factor considerations for the use of reinforced concrete. The structural engineer, owner, and architect coordinated construction so that concrete became a more economical solution, simplifying the structural layout so that fewer long span transfers of the tower structure above the theater were required.

Design Team: HDR, Inc.
Construction Team Manager: Kiewit Building Group
Recognized for design and construction excellence for longevity, safety, shape, and usage considerations. Unique factors included stringent vibration criteria coupled along with linear accelerator vaults requiring massive concrete around the vaults to shield the radiation.

Kahului, HI
Design Team: Demattei Wong Architecture / BASE
Construction Team Manager: Bowers+Kubota
Recognized for design and construction excellence for economy, layout, usage, and environmental concerns. No interior bearing walls are provided and the structure is designed as a moment frame system to maintain an open floor plan concept for the structure and maximize ventilation.
