Durability in reinforced concrete depends on more than the selection of a single material. It requires a coordinated approach to material properties, design and detailing, fabrication, handling, construction, quality assurance, exposure conditions, and long-term performance. This six-part CRSI webinar series examines established reinforcing steel systems used to improve the durability and service life of transportation and other concrete infrastructure. Each one-hour session connects governing standards with material behavior, design considerations, construction practices, research, and documented field performance.

Hot-dip galvanized reinforcing steel protects embedded steel through both barrier and sacrificial mechanisms. This session connects the requirements of ASTM A767/A767M with coating characteristics, corrosion behavior, bond, design and detailing considerations, fabrication and handling practices, and documented field performance.

Low-carbon chromium reinforcing steel combines high-strength mechanical properties with improved corrosion resistance. This session examines its material behavior and microstructure, governing ASTM and AASHTO requirements, design considerations for high-strength reinforcement, fabrication, and applications in U.S. and Canadian infrastructure.

Manufacturing, Fabrication, and Applications

Continuously galvanized reinforcing steel is produced by applying a zinc-alloy coating before bar fabrication. This session explains the manufacturing process and ASTM A1094/A1094M requirements, including coating characteristics, post-coating bending and fabrication, installation considerations, quality control, and available corrosion-performance research.

This session reviews fusion-bonded epoxy-coated and textured epoxy-coated reinforcing steel systems. The presentation connects coating chemistry and electrical properties with corrosion protection, bond behavior, design and detailing, fabrication and handling, repair procedures, quality control, and the requirements of ASTM A775, ASTM A934, and ASTM A1124.
Speakers:
- Brent Toller, CRSI — Technical Marketing Manager for the Epoxy Interest Group at CRSI. He has more than 25 years of experience with reinforcing steel, protective coatings, and galvanizing.
- Jigar Mistry, Ph.D., Sherwin-Williams — Global Marketing Director, Functional Coatings, at Sherwin-Williams. A polymer and coatings chemist, he helped develop the textured epoxy powder coating covered by ASTM A1124. He earned his Ph.D. from Missouri University of Science and Technology.

This session provides a technical overview of stainless steel reinforcement, including alloy selection, corrosion mechanisms and performance, design and detailing considerations, fabrication, construction practices, and field applications under ASTM A955/A955M.
Speaker: Richard Huza, PE — Executive Director of the Stainless Steel Interest Group and has been with Salit Steel since 2009. He earned a B.E. in civil and structural engineering and an MBA in finance. He is a former chair of ACI Committee 439 and is a voting member of ACI Committee 222, ASTM Committee A01, and CRSI committees.
