2016 HONORS Recipients

Submittals were reviewed in particular on the ways in which reinforced concrete has been leveraged by professionals to improve the structure’s value, sustainability, appearance and durability. All submittals were judged on the basis of the extent to which ultimate outcome objectives were achieved. Special consideration was given to design and/or construction approaches that leverage steel reinforced concrete in an innovative manner or to an exceptional degree.

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by meeting owner cost and schedule goals, enhancing value and minimizing disruptions to existing conditions.


Hollywood 959

Honors Award - Commercial Building
Los Angeles, CA

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by leveraging several inherent material properties of cast-in-place reinforced concrete as well as innovative approaches to achieve open, flexible work space.


SMUD East Campus Operations

Honors Award - Governmental Facility 
Sacramento, CA

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by using concrete’s inherent thermal mass in an active system approach that achieved sustainability goals at a low cost to the owner.


Earthquake Engineering Laboratory

Honors Award - Educational Facility
Reno, NV

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by creating the structure to be LEED Platinum and Net Zero while providing much needed space for operations that serve the community. The building provided a unique use of thermal mass, which reduced enegy costs substantially. Long spans were also utilized, made possible by innovative thinking from the design team.


Parkland Hospital

Honors Award - Healthcare Building
Dallas, TX

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by utilizing a 120 ft span over an opening and a 62 ft cantilever. Constructability was considered, along with other items such as vibraton and quality control. The building was built ahead of schedule and within budget.


45 East 22nd Street

Honors Award - Residential Building
New York, NY

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by leveraging high-strength reinforcing steel in conjunction with high-strength concrete to support a building with a narrow base. Utilizing reinforced concrete also provided an open flat plate concrete floor system enabling high ceilings for a luxury appeal while still achieving an efficient design.

Honors Award - Residential Building
Brooklyn, NY

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by providing maximum floor space in this high-value area. The inherent material properties of reinforced concrete were utilized effectively, which enabled rapid completion of the structure.


BAM South

Honors Award - Residential Building
Brooklyn, NY

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by effectively using reinforced concrete to solve numerous concerns at a challenging and restrictive site. The structure utilizes sloped columns and several open plan areas to maximize the value of the space in this elegant building.


Grove at Grand Bay

Honors Award - Residential Building
Coconut Grove, FL

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by providing unique selling spaces in distinctive spiral towers. Considerable cost savings were realized by increasing the sellable square footage of the project through the use of high-strength reinforcing steel.


Jasper - 45 Lansing Street

Honors Award - Residential Building
San Francisco, CA

Recognized for excellence in design and construction through effective use of reinforced concrete for noise and fire resistance, as well as for construction in a confined space. The design enabled more stories to be placed within the building height envelope to achieve a residential structure that appealed to the local community.

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by maximizing usable space for occupants in a tight building footprint by incorporating a unique reinforced concrete frame that eliminated interior columns.

Honors Award - Cultural & Entertainment Facilities
Miami Beach, FL

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by careful consideration of the construction sequencing and incorporation of a bathtub system due to its proximity to the ocean. Key to the building’s character are the exposed concrete surfaces.


San Diego Rental Car Center

Honors Award - Transportation Facilities
San Diego, CA

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by providing an aesthetically pleasing entryway for many visitors to the city. Long spans, a rapid construction schedule, and design changes during construction were all achieved easily and economically by using reinforced concrete.


Provo City Center - Temple

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by constructing a new, larger building within the footprint of an existing historical building, while still preserving its architectural features.


Granite Mountain Records Vault

Honors Award - Cultural & Entertainment Facilities
Salt Lake City, UT

Recognized for excellence in design and construction by upgrading an existing facility to modern seismic requirements, while remaining unobtrusive to the existing conditions. The unique application and framing system greatly leveraged reinforced concrete’s capabilities to ensure a secure space.
